City of Khasab:

The Musandam Peninsula is the northernmost part of Oman jutting out into the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The province, or governorate of Musandam as it is officially known, is separated from the rest of Oman by various of the United Arab Emirates - Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah. Musandam more or less begins where the mountains rise from the plains of Ras al Khaimah.
The mountains have isolated communities for centuries. Coastal villages can be reached only by boat rather than by road. Pockets of flat land support meagre agriculture. The population of approximately 29,000 is concentrated in the capital, Khasab (18,000 in 2004) in the north and Dibba (5,500) on the east coast. Fishing is the principal economic activity supported by employment in government jobs. Tourism could be a major earner. Traders from Iran boost the port trade of Khasab.

Khasab, meaning fertility, is a peaceful town lying in a small harbour at the base of Wadi Khasab in Musandam in the north of Oman. Khasab overlooks the pristine waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Straits of Hurmus. The land in the area is rich with an abundance of fresh water. The population is 24,000 souls which increases during the summer as villagers from the vast surrounding mountains relocate to the town to for fishing and to harvest dates.
Khasab trades with Iran and obviously due to its proximity to the sea, fishing plays an enormous part in the tradition and economy of Khasab; the harbour is dotted with small craft teeming with fish alongside the sedate traditional hand built dhows used for generations by fishing families.
Diving in this area is described as ‘an experienced divers dive, due to strong currents and large fish. With the diving in the UAE and surrounding areas being limited, it is a welcome addition to any diver’s logbook. There are many sites, more sheltered and less deep, those also welcome beginners. The spectacular scenery, impressive fjords created by the majestic Hajar Mountains, is both
inviting and exhilarating. Visibility is usually good, with over 10 meters common, and there is a rich sea life to enjoy. An abundance of plankton results in a wealth of fish, especially the larger species of rays, sharks, barracuda, tuna and the occasional sighting of Whale Sharks. Watch the traditional lifestyle of fishermen and the Bedouin. Share the early morning hustle and bustle of life in the fishing harbor.
